Therapeutic Massage Services

Therapeutic massage services bend oregon

massage services bendTherapeutic Massage is a term that’s used to describe a broad range of therapeutic modalities which are all geared to enhance the body’s healing capacity, significantly improve one’s present level of health, and reduce future imbalances or injuries from occurring. When it comes to athletic injuries or performance, therapeutic massage is often the “secret weapon” for preparing an athlete for an event, helping him/her recover from an event, and maintaining performance levels during the season and off season. Below are some brief descriptions on the types of massage Bend Sports Massage has to offer.

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep Tissue is a term that describes any modality that intends to affect soft tissues through deep pressure applied to muscle bellies, ligaments, and tendons. Typically it’s used as a way to differentiate Western (treatment oriented work from spa massage) or Eastern (modalities like Reiki, Shiatsu, and Thai Massage). Deep Tissue massage focuses on the inner layers of muscle and fascia in the body through the use of deep pressure and slow, firm strokes. Sports massage, Myofascial Release, and Swedish massage can all be incorporated into a deep tissue massage for acute work and auto injurie to chronic pain and improved mobility. As this is our most versatile type of massage, this is often the most prescribed form of therapeutic massage for the treatment regarding a work injury or auto injury.

Sports Massage

Specific for athletes which include:

  • Addressing range of motion and passive & active stretching to improve flexibility and maintain or improve joint health.
  • Effleurage or muscle stripping techniques to flush out inflammation of the fatigued muscle tissue and improve circulation to the muscle bellies.
  • Cross-fiber friction to break up scar tissue and adhesions.
  • Kneading, shaking, and rolling techniques to relax muscle spasms and optimize contractile strength and reactivity.

Swedish Massage

As one of the best-known types of bodywork performed today, one of the primary goals of Swedish massage is to relax the entire body. This is accomplished by rubbing the muscles with long gliding strokes in the direction of blood returning to the heart. Swedish massage therapy goes beyond relaxation. Swedish massage is exceptionally beneficial for improving oxygenation of the blood, decreasing toxins, and improving overall circulation and lymphatic flow while easing tension. By relieving muscle tension, Swedish massage can be both relaxing and energizing.

Myofascial Release

myofascial release massageAs many athletes may have heard of ART, our therapists perform a very similar technique. Active Release Technique or ART is a form of Myofascial Release.

Fascia is a connective tissue that is found throughout our bodies. It wraps around muscle fibers, muscle bundles, blood vessels and nerves and separates what it enfolds from the tissue surrounding it. When fascia is healthy and free of adhesions it allows adjacent tissues to glide past each other unrestricted. Over time, however, our tissues accrue small and not so small injuries that are healed with scar tissue. This scar tissue binds fascia to underlying tissue, adheres it to adjacent tissue and causes rough, abrasive spots along the surface of tissues moving past each other. With Myofascial Release, the practitioner seeks out these adhesions and rough spots and gently but insistently works to smooth and release them. This leads to greater freedom of movement, fewer injuries, and happier people overall. This is often incorporated in the treatment of an auto injury or work injury in order for tissues to respond and heal properly.

Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger Point Therapy aims to search out spots in muscle tissue where chronic tension has led to permanent spasms and release these spasms. Each of our muscle groups is made out of many muscle strands or bundles, which, in turn, are made from many smaller muscle fibers. These fibers and bundles all contract and release in concert to produce movement. Sometimes, if a muscle group is overstressed, parts of it will stop responding to the signal to release with the group and become stuck in contraction. Trigger Point Therapy resolves these spasms by applying deep sustained pressure directly to the point, elongating the muscle group affected, and treating it and the surrounding tissues with circulatory techniques to flush out the area.
