Dr. Kremer's Functional Medicine Approach to Addressing the Underlying CAUSES of Disease, Dysfunction, and Poor Health start with looking at Three Body Systems:

Functional Medicine Inexpensive Lab Testing

Dr. Kremer's training through the Institute for Funtional Medicine and the Kalish Institute of Functional Medicine have sharpened his focus to a Three Body System approach regarding the majority of today's chronic health problems. This approach addresses the Neuroendocrine system, the Gastrointesinal system, and addresses Detoxification/Inflammation concerns.

Much of the "Functional" lab testing we offer does not necessarily look for a disease to slap a diagnosis code on, but addresses the underlying imbalances, dysregulation, and deficiencies that are driving disease or signs of poor health. When determining and correcting the underlying causes, your body can now function optimally and self regulate the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal ( HPA ) axis, hormones, immune function, digestion, and support detoxification. There is no longer a need to "manage" symptoms with pharmaceuticals or accept your current state of health as the new norm.

From testing for nutritional deficiencies in athletes, stool testing for those with IBS, saliva testing for adrenal fatigue and hormonal imbalances, food allergy & sensitivity and/or gluten testing, or a more comprehensive cholesterol and cardiovascular panel- you can contact our office for an appointment or directly order bloodwork or specialty labwork throughour RUPA HEALTH portal!

Below is some more information on the types of tests you can order through our website. Need more guidance? Give us a call to schedule and appointment with Dr. Kremer or our Nutritionist Cassie!

Adrenocortex Stress Profile

This simple multi-sample saliva test is a great start to assessing an individuals stress response in regards to cortisol levels and the body's Hypothalamus- Pituitary- Adrenal (HPA) axis. When this becomes dysregulated, a cascade of symptoms and other concerns begin to occur. This is also known as "adrenal fatigue". Insomnia, fatigue, mood swings, depresssion, low libido, weight gain, and anxiety are the most common presenting symptoms when our body's stress response becomes over taxed. Furthermore, chronic stress can lead to a decreased immune response causing lowered levels of secretory IgA (the body's first line of defense to bugs and pathogens).

This test also measures DHEA which further confirms the Stage of HPA axis dysregulation. When DHEA (the key sex hormone in the production of testosterone and estrogens) is off, other hormones are also imbalanced. Correcting this will also greatly impact other body systems which makes this test a great start to getting some answers.

Nutritional Deficiency and Organic Acids Testing

As we are all biochemically unique, several factors affect our personal nutritional needs such as age, lifestyle, intensity of physical training, prescription drug usage, past and present illnessses or injuries, absorption rate, genetics and more. For athletes, to optimize performance, speed recovery, lessen oxidative stress, and truly achieve that competitive edge- this test is a must!

With a simple urine test, we can have a big picture into organic acids and a view into the body's cellular metabolic processes. We can assess the metabolic markers associated with energy production, neurotransmitter breakdown, detoxification, and intestinal microbial activity.

This nutritional testing is valuable for determining:

  • Functional vitamin and mineral status
  • Amino acid deficiencies
  • Oxidative damage and antioxidant need
  • Phase I & Phase II detoxification capacity
  • B vitamin needs
  • Neurotransmitter metabolites
  • Mitochondrial energy production
  • Methylation sufficiency
  • Lipoic acid and CoQ10 status
  • Markers for bacterial and yeast overgrowth

Celiac / Gluten Sensitivity Testing

Celiac Bend OregonThis is a great test for people who have a family history of any autoimmune disease, even if they're asymptomatic (no symptoms). Blood tests regarding Celiac testing are typically covered by insurance. Since so many autoimmune diseases are triggered by gluten, these tests show patients if a gluten-free diet may help prevent him or her from going down the same path as other family members that may be experiencing disease. Prior to testing, gluten must be in the diet.

Genetic Testing

MTHFR Genotyping looks for the common genetic defects that are responsible for increasing the risk of cancer, heart disease, and many neurological and mental disorders. Those who carry this genetic mutation produce much less of the MTHFR or “Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase” enzyme, resulting in a reduced ability to convert (through a process of methylation) folic acid/folate into its bioavailable form (5-methyltetrahydrofolate) which is required by the body to function properly and affects more than 20 different processes. Functions of methylation involve turning genes on and off, processing hormones, building immune cells, DNA and RNA synthesis, energy production, detoxification, and neurological function. Without proper methylation, serious health complications can arise.

Comprehensive Lipid Panel

Natural Heart Health Bend Lipoprotein Particle Profiles are the Gold Standard tests for addressing cardiovascular risk factors. Cholesterol testing has historically been used as the standard indicator for cardiovascular disease classified as HDL (good) or LDL (bad). However, it is actually the lipoprotein particles that carry the cholesterol throughout the body, not necessarily the cholesterol within them, that are responsible for key steps in plaque production and the resulting development of cardiovascular disease. Approximately 50 percent of people suffering from heart attacks have shown “normal” cholesterol numbers (NHLBI – The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute). Wellness Doctor offers this leading cardiovascular technology through a simple blood test and integrates dietary intervention for getting your risk factors under control- Naturally.

Lyme Disease Testing

Lyme disease and it’s often overlooked co-infections are on the rise in the U.S. and other parts of the world. Let’s start with some basic information about the fastest growing vector-borne disease in the U.S. and Europe (Lyme Disease) as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Each year, approximately 30,000 cases of Lyme disease are reported to the CDC.
  • Recent estimates suggest the actual number of new Lyme cases in the U.S. alone to be over 300,000 annually.
  • Lyme can be effectively cured if caught early and treated with 2-3 weeks of antibiotics.
  • The number of confirmed Lyme cases has nearly tripled since the 1990s, and in the northeastern and upper midwestern U.S., Lyme disease has increased by more than 300%. (1)
  • The CDC’s chief of epidemiology and surveillance states: “Lyme disease is a tremendous public health problem in the United States, and clearly highlights the urgent need for prevention.”

In a part of the country where I never expected to see a single individual with Lyme disease, it turns out, I've seen many right here in Central Oregon. Most present with a form of chronic or persisent Lyme in which early treatment was missed. Many present with the typical "chronic fatigue", joint and muscle pain, or "fibromyalgia". I also see conditions like POTS or Mast Cell Activation Syndrome in many of these patients. The good news is- We offer the most broad and in-depth testing available in the area of Lyme and it's co-infections.

As this is a growing and serious problem in the U.S. and other contries, Dr. Kremer has written two columns, published in Paleo Magazine. Check them out here:
